Suda 51 is amazing.
Not too long ago, a nifty little title called Killer 7 was released on the Gamecube and PS2. It was a survival horror game with an odd control scheme, cel-shaded graphics, and an intriguing plotline. The game was made by Capcom, and the director and producer of the game was Goichi Suda, better known as Suda 51.
This year, a game by the name of No More Heroes was released on the Wii. The game is an over-the-top hack and slash with plenty of M-rated content to make Resident Evil and Devil May Cry look tame. Like its predecessor (though both are completely separate games), the game sports a quirky cel-shaded style. It's actually rather funny to watch the massive deluges of blood spurt out of an enemy's neck, once you consider the way it looks.
Within the first few minutes of the game, you are introduced to Travis Touchdown, a typical otaku - with anime posters, figurines, and all, alongside wrestling merchandise - who lives in near poverty in the city of Santa Destroy, California. He won a beam katana (like a lightsaber) in an internet auction, then used it to kill the eleventh ranked assassin of the United Assassins Association. The game revolves around Travis' struggle to become the top-ranked assassin in the UAA.
The gameplay is oftentimes free-roaming, Travis being able to use his motorcycle (the only vehicle available) to get from place to place and accept missions. During missions and other such things, the game shows its true nature, that being a hack and slash. The combat is controlled by only three buttons, A for attacks, B for stun moves, and Z for locking on to a target. Though simplistic, finishing moves which are controlled by pointing the Wiimote in a specified direction help add depth and make everything intuitive.
I don't know what else I can really say about the game. It's a truly amazing title that stands out amongst other games in the same genre (hack and slash, as specified before), like Devil May Cry. Nothing more can be said about No More Heroes. It's just a great game. Pick it up and try it out for yourself.
